Earlier this month, <\/span>The Reporter\u2019s <\/span><\/i>Kai Sacco got the opportunity to interview writer and director Rian Johnson and actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt for their upcoming film <\/span>Looper<\/span><\/i> (in theaters September 28th).<\/span><\/p>\n

Rian Johnson<\/strong><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> How are you doing today?<\/span><\/p>\n

R.J.<\/strong>:<\/strong> I\u2019m good, man. I\u2019m good.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> Time travel movies can get tricky given the fact that you\u2019re dealing with past, present, and future periods which often times can lead to enormous plot holes and inconsistencies. I found \u201cLooper\u201d to be extremely well thought out\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

R.J.<\/strong>:<\/strong> Thanks man.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> \u2026and I was wondering if you created some kind of <\/span>Looper<\/span><\/i> Bible to aid you in the screenwriting process?<\/span><\/p>\n

R.J<\/strong>:<\/strong> Yeah. I came up with a whole system for how all of this stuff works. I\u2019m happy to hear that it worked for you though because a big part of the writing process was coming up with this whole system and then not explaining a lot of it; just letting the rules play out on screen and hoping the audience will just kind of understand why this stuff is working. I think that\u2019s one of the real challenges of writing a time travel movie. There\u2019s a temptation to have a scene where you draw on the chalkboard and explain it all. I didn\u2019t want that in <\/span>Looper<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>Looper<\/span><\/i> uses time travel to set up a situation, but it\u2019s not about time travel. It\u2019s about these two guys kind of facing down the choice one of them has to make. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S<\/strong>:<\/strong> I know that Shane Carruth\u2014who made <\/span>Primer<\/span><\/i>\u2014worked on some of the time travel sequences\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

R.J.<\/strong>:<\/strong> He didn\u2019t actually. We started working on them together and then for logistic reasons it just didn\u2019t work out.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> Oh because I was going to ask you what the extent of his work was.<\/span><\/p>\n

R.J.<\/strong>:<\/strong> It was for a bit that actually ended up getting cut from the movie. There was originally a sequence where you see Old Joe [Willis]\u2026after he sees the prostitute\u2019s kid, he thinks, \u201cI can\u2019t do this\u201d, and he goes to throw his gun away, and as his gun is slipping out of his hand, you see the memories of his wife being swallowed in this cloud one-by-one. And at the end he can\u2019t do it and decides to take the gun back and complete the mission. Shane was working with me on how these cloud memories would happen. But we never got any further then some initial storyboard shots.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> That\u2019s such a shame. I heard about it so long ago that I started to wonder why I hadn\u2019t heard his name pop-up recently.<\/span><\/p>\n

R.J.<\/strong>:<\/strong> Yeah that\u2019s the reason. [<\/span>Laughs<\/span><\/i>]<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> Will we ever see a R.J. Johnson horror movie?<\/span><\/p>\n

R.J.<\/strong>:<\/strong> You know I\u2019m too big of a wimp. [<\/span>Laughs<\/span><\/i>] I\u2019ve got good friends who are great horror directors. I\u2019m in awe of what they do. My friend Lucky McKee is a terrific horror movie director. There are horror elements in \u201cLooper\u201d, but to do a great horror movie, you have to go to those dark places. You have to not be afraid of just delving into the blackness of the world. And I think I might be too big of a wimp. [<\/span>Laughs<\/span><\/i>] I always need redemption at the end. I need to get to a place where I\u2019m seeing the positive side of where we\u2019re all going to end up. And a great horror movie by definition is usually the opposite of that.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> Thanks for your time today.<\/span><\/p>\n

R.J.<\/strong>:<\/strong> Thanks so much. It was nice to meet you. It was a real pleasure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joseph Gordon-Levitt<\/strong><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> Hey man. How are you doing?<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> Good and yourself?<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> Good thanks.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> \u201cPremium Rush\u201d was awesome; a lot of fun.<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> Oh thanks man!<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> My cousin actually did the bike meetup in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> Oh did he?<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> Yeah they all rode to the movie theater on their bikes.<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> That\u2019s fantastic. I love that. There was a bunch of those around the country. I thought it was really cool.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> In an interview, R.J.said that the first cut of the movie was two hours and 45 minutes and about 47 of those minutes were cut. Was there anything that you were really sad to see go?<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> No. [<\/span>Laughs<\/span><\/i>] You know, that\u2019s how the process usually goes. It starts long and you have to refine it and refine it and just get to the core of the story. It all serves the story.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> There\u2019s a line in the movie where Jeff Daniels\u2019 character says to you, \u201cIt\u2019s the little ones that get you\u201d. In the context of the movie, what does that mean to you?<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> Well, in the context of that scene it\u2019s because this sort of unexpected and little thing comes back to be a big deal. He compares it to little spiders which I thought was interesting. [<\/span>Laughs<\/span><\/i>]<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> Are we going to see a trailer for \u201cDon Jon\u2019s Addiction\u201d anytime soon? Because I know that you guys are editing now. I\u2019ve been following the set updates on Tumblr. It\u2019s pretty cool.<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> Thanks for bringing that up. That\u2019s awesome. Yeah it went great. We finished shooting about two months ago and we\u2019re in the process of editing it right now. Scarlett Johansson did a really good job. She\u2019s playing this character that I think is really different from anything she\u2019s played before. Julianne Moore is\u2014I think one of the greatest actors alive; Tony Danza plays my dad. He\u2019s really different than you\u2019re used to seeing him. I had a ball man.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> I\u2019m so stoked for it.<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> Oh thanks so much. I\u2019m glad you\u2019re excited for it. Because I was wondering if people would be like, \u201cYeah sure. Actor-kid-turned-director\u201d. [<\/span>Laughs<\/span><\/i>]<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> [<\/span>Laughs<\/span><\/i>] Do you have any favorite films that you saw at the Toronto International Film Festival besides \u201cLooper\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> I got to see two films at TIFF; both of which I really loved. One was \u201cThe Master\u201d and the other was \u201cCloud Atlas\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> It [\u201cThe Master\u201d] was screened in 70mm right?<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> Yes. It was beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> We don\u2019t have any 70mm-capable theaters down here unfortunately.<\/span><\/p>\n

J.G.L<\/strong>:<\/strong> That\u2019s too bad. Even the transfer to 35mm will still be beautiful. But it\u2019s a stunning movie. And \u201cCloud Atlas\u201d was also really cool.<\/span><\/p>\n

K.S.<\/strong>:<\/strong> I\u2019m out of time, but thank you so much.<\/span><\/p>\n
