For Jose Granda hands speak louder than words.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a classroom in building 1 at the North Campus, Granda leads his students through a session on the best way to express the word \u201cmust\u201d in sign language.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t simply sign the word\u201d Granda, a sign language professor, signals to his students. \u201cEmphasize it.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amused, students follow his hands and expressions, not daring to turn away from what is happening at the center of the classroom. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Granda has been passionately teaching American Sign Language students at Miami Dade College for 21 years. He \u00a0is scheduled to release a \u00a0set of educational DVD\u2019s for ASL students in the Spring of 2013 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am deaf and proud,\u201d Granda signs. \u201cStudents say that I am strict but it is the best way for them to learn the language.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Granda was born deaf.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a child he attended a school in Florida , but later moved to New York for five years to attend a school for deaf students. He later graduated from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine, Fla. and later graduated from Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., a school \u00a0that specializes in the development of deaf, and hard of hearing students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Granda, whose \u00a0mother, brother and sister all learned sign language, has experienced firsthand the frustrations of growing up in a \u201chearing world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a little frustrating but I learned the right approach,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout his career Granda has taught at MDC<\/span>\u2014<\/span>as well as other institutions around the state<\/span>\u2014<\/span>leading presentations alongside deaf performer Trix Bruce, releasing five instructional DVD\u2019s and two VHS tapes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI particularly like his video about countries, states, and cities, \u201c said ASL professor and interpreter Melissa Martin. \u201dI use this video in class along with his ABC Stories.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

His videos are all for learning purposes and can be purchased by phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a role model for the deaf,\u201d said ASL lab assistant Nadine Fordham. \u201cIt shows that they can be successful in anything they want.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Adais Llerena, who drives on Wednesdays and Fridays from West Palm Beach to the North Campus for two hours to take Granda\u2019s \u00a0ASL conversation skills class, called him \u201cthe best teacher to have.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe is so knowledgeable about the language,\u201d \u00a0\u00a0Llerena said. \u201cHe is like an encyclopedia. He has so much experience and he\u2019s been all over the world.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Granda is commonly known as the \u201cGrandfather of ASL\u201d in the Deaf community.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has worked on a national level providing workshops for interpreters, consulting services for interpreter training programs, and a variety of projects by deaf films producers. He also volunteers as \u201cDeaf Santa\u201d during Christmas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe is an inspiration to any young person, hearing or deaf, to continue practicing and improving whatever your career goals may be\u201d Martin said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
