I never thought I would have to crawl through a window to get anywhere in life.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve heard people talk about knocking on doors to get somewhere, and opening gates \u2014 all metaphors for opportunities that I had never paid attention to until the morning of July 20.<\/p>\n
There I was: business pants, a blue blouse and high heels trying to fit my head through my\u00a0 small living room window while my angry dog tugged on the cuff of my pants.<\/p>\n
All because I had misplaced my house key.<\/p>\n
Two hours later I was speeding through the expressway, zigzagging my way through traffic to get to an interview that would change the course of my life.<\/p>\n
A five person committee was waiting for me to decide if I was fit to be the next editor-in-chief ofThe Reporter<\/em>, the student newspaper at Miami Dade College.<\/p>\n Finally, at 11: 45 a.m., I got out of my beige Toyota Corolla and made my way to a conference room at Wolfson Campus. Walking there felt like I was about to go through surgery. My heart was pounding, palms sweaty, the whole nine yards.<\/p>\n At noon, an hour long interview started.\u00a0 I was asked every single question imaginable.<\/p>\n After the interview, I sat by an emergency exit door waiting for the verdict.<\/p>\n As I waited, I stared at the cracks in the pavement and began to think of all the stories that sidewalk must have. It made me think about how I never want to stop writing stories.<\/p>\n Editor-in-chief or not, what makes me a journalist is not great grammar, but a desire to find stories and the truth,\u00a0 whatever\u00a0 that may be.<\/p>\n When I started as a staff writer at The Reporter I never thought I would have the opportunity to become Editor-in-Chief. Now it feels like the ad in the fifteenth issue of The Reporter<\/em> seeking an editor-in-chief for the 2012-13 school year was placed there just for me to see.<\/p>\n I\u2019m glad five other people thought so too.<\/p>\n I am thrilled to have been chosen to serve as Editor-in-Chief of The Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n The reason I crawled through a window was not because I misplaced my house key, but because walking through doors is too simple. All great stories never have a perfect beginning or end.<\/p>\n As J.K.
