With great power comes great responsibility. The American media has influence over how people think. Sometimes members of the media who are burdened with such power can use it irresponsibly, specifically when they antagonize social movements for change in America.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nelson Underdue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

McDonald\u2019s restaurant staff has been lobbying for a higher pay than the minimum wage that most non-management workers receive. McDonald\u2019s workers have staged walk-outs and have protested outside of restaurant locations all across \u00a0the country, demanding $15 an hour for their services. On April 15, 10,000 frustrated employees and supporters marched through the streets of New York City to the Times Square McDonald\u2019s to express their grievances publicly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the shadowy confines of an office in Dallas, Texas, Matt Walsh, a contributor at <\/span>The Blaze<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>a news and entertainment website founded by conservative radio personality Glenn Beck, is responding to the McDonald\u2019s employees. <\/span><\/p>\n

Walsh mentions that he had to work 10 years before earning a \u201ccomfortable living\u201d and points out that if McDonald\u2019s employees were to receive $15 an hour, they would be making more money than teachers, firemen, and EMTs, in a letter titled: \u201c<\/span>Fast Food Workers: You Don\u2019t Deserve $15 an Hour to Flip Burgers, and That\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In July 2015, presidential hopeful Martin O\u2019Malley addressed a crowd at the Netroots Nation Conference<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a communion of activists demanding that he address criminal justice and police brutality. <\/span><\/p>\n

When they shouted, “Black lives matter!” the mantra of those opposed to the killing of black Americans at the hands of police in recent months, O’Malley responded: “Black lives matter. White lives matter. All lives matter.” The mostly black demonstrators, responded by booing him loudly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile in the cozy enclosure of a radio station in New York, ESPN sports analyst and radio personality Stephen A. Smith offered a rebuttal to the crowd in Arizona: \u201c<\/span>I’m a black man. Of course I<\/span> know<\/span> Black Lives Matter<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span> You can’t \u2018boo\u2019 a presidential candidate just [because] he says \u2018all lives matter\u2019 and followed up by asking black America \u2018Where is all the noise about <\/span>[<\/span>Black<\/span> Lives Matter<\/span>] <\/span>when black folks are killing black folks?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Black people don\u2019t think that their lives are more important than others. Fast food workers don\u2019t think that their toil is more significant than a teacher\u2019s. But a presidential candidate can\u2019t ignore a crowd\u2019s cry for change and offer a clich\u00e9 as a solution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coupling that with the equally unfair notion that black people don\u2019t get upset about black on black murders is wholly ignorant. The \u201cStop the Violence\u201d movement has been active in American inner cities since 1988 and has addressed that issue aggressively. St. Louis based music producer and community leader, Rodney \u201cThe Average Joe\u201d Prather put that rhetoric in perspective by noting that \u201cafter 9\/11 nobody was asking \u2018what about American on American crime\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s also wrong to dismiss a plea for living wages by devaluing work, (like using \u201cflipping burgers\u201d as an all encompassing job description for fast food workers) and cruel comparisons to skilled laborers who have not started a mass campaign to increase their own unfair wages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Malcolm X warned in 1963, \u201c<\/span>If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
