{"id":642,"date":"2015-09-15T13:00:16","date_gmt":"2015-09-15T17:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=642"},"modified":"2021-07-16T11:12:48","modified_gmt":"2021-07-16T15:12:48","slug":"new-assistant-volleyball-coach-dantas-mcfarlane-brings-wealth-of-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/new-assistant-volleyball-coach-dantas-mcfarlane-brings-wealth-of-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"New Assistant Volleyball Coach Brings Wealth of Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miami Dade College\u2019s newest Assistant Volleyball Coach, Kelly Dantas-McFarlane, brings a plethora of volleyball experience to the Lady Sharks this upcoming season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Dantas-McFarlane had an active lifestyle as a youngster, participating in sports like swimming and basketball. She started playing volleyball at the age of 13 and stuck to it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two years later, in 1995, Dantas-McFarlane decided to join her high school volleyball team. Soon many opportunities came for the six-foot, 15-year-old. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One year later, she was 6-foot-4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI remember in one year I had a growth span,\u201d said Dantas-McFarlane. \u201cIt was crazy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2001, Dantas-McFarlane moved to Miami to play volleyball for Barry University as a middle blocker. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She came to the U.S. without knowing any English. It took \u00a0her three months to understand what others were saying and about half a year to start speaking English. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI felt lonely at times,\u201d Dantas-McFarlane said. \u201cEnglish wasn\u2019t my first language, so to read, it would take me like a whole day because I would have to translate everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dantas-McFarlane aided the Buccaneers on their path to win the DII National Championship in 2004. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also overcame her difficulty with English, earning her bachelor\u2019s degree in exercise science from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barry.edu\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Barry University<\/span><\/a> in 2004 and her master\u2019s degree in movement science, also from Barry in 2006. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After earning her master\u2019s degree, Dantas-McFarlane moved to Seattle, Washington and worked as an exercise specialist in physical therapy. Two years later she moved back to Miami and started working at a summer camp for children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Months after working at the summer camp, Dantas-MacFarlane got her first coaching job, helping 16-year-olds at a youth volleyball club named South Florida that no longer exists. She coached there until 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Dantas-MacFarlane served as an assistant volleyball coach at Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School from 2010 until 2015, for the boys and girls varsity teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to MDC, Dantas-McFarlane is currently the director assistant at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebelle Athletics a volleyball skills training program. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe brings experience both from a coaching perspective and a players perspective,\u201d said Lady Sharks Head Volleyball Coach, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/origenes-kiko-benoit-named-coach-of-the-year\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Origenes \u201cKiko\u201d Benoit<\/span><\/a>. \u201cShe is able to help the kids because she has been in their situation before by playing at Barry [University] and with the Brazilian National team.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Miami Dade College\u2019s newest Assistant Volleyball Coach, Kelly Dantas-McFarlane, brings a plethora of volleyball experience to the Lady Sharks this upcoming season.
