{"id":7055,"date":"2011-06-13T22:21:18","date_gmt":"2011-06-14T02:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=7055"},"modified":"2016-05-04T22:21:46","modified_gmt":"2016-05-05T02:21:46","slug":"college-to-receive-multi-million-dollar-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/college-to-receive-multi-million-dollar-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"College To Receive Multi-Million Dollar Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation has chosen Miami Dade College to partake in a grant program designed to strengthen student performance and help increase graduation rates.<\/p>\n<p>The grant program, known as Completion by Design, is designed to double the number of graduates and certificate receivers in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>MDC was the only institution in Florida to receive the award, which was also awarded to 20 other colleges in Ohio, North Carolina and Texas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMDC was chosen for its real dedication to students and its willingness to redesign the student experience so more students can receive a certificate or degree in a timely fashion,\u201d said Suzanne Walsh, senior program officer for post-secondary success at the Gates Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The five-year grant program consists of three phases, the first one consisting of a year of planning, for which the College has received $494,675.<\/p>\n<p>Each of MDC\u2019s eight campuses will have teams analyzing data on coursework retention and progress, and will then create strategies to increase the number of graduates.<\/p>\n<p>The phases that follow will focus on the implementation and adoption of the strategies.<\/p>\n<p>If the strategies are implemented successfully, MDC will work with the state of Florida to find methods to implement the strategies at other institutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would call it a home-run,\u201d said Pamela Menke, vice provost at Wolfson Campus and primary contact for the Gates Foundation. \u201cSo far, [the members from the Foundation] were really wowed by what we had to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>College President Eduardo Padr\u00f3n believes that the grant will open new doors for the College.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a very significant opportunity for the College,\u201d said Padr\u00f3n in a college-wide email. \u201cOur commitment to evidence and data to support decision-making, program development and the identification of critical points in students\u2019 progression, as well as our history of support and completion initiatives, provides us with a strong foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation has chosen Miami Dade College to partake in a grant program designed to strengthen student performance and help increase graduation rates.
