{"id":7951,"date":"2010-10-18T17:12:22","date_gmt":"2010-10-18T21:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=7951"},"modified":"2016-05-12T17:14:29","modified_gmt":"2016-05-12T21:14:29","slug":"a-zany-funny-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/a-zany-funny-production\/","title":{"rendered":"A Zany, Funny Production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Picasso at the Lapin Agile<\/em> is a comedy about Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso meeting at a bar in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Written by actor Steve Martin, the play toys with the themes of \u201cart\u201d and \u201cgenius\u201d as both men debate their opposing views on their true meanings.<\/p>\n<p>Portrayed in their youth, Einstein and Picasso are two men with misplaced egos and arrogance.<\/p>\n<p>The acting gets the job done by making the audience laugh. But, as a whole, it\u2019s cheesy and ostentatious. The characters seem to come straight out of a Mel Brooks comedy with corny gestures, such as re-enacting the theme to <em>The Good, the Bad and the Ugly<\/em> (1966) during a \u201cgenius showdown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Extended monologues are as-signed to nearly every actor. On the other hand, the drama department is not to be blamed since they are staying true to Martin\u2019s script.<\/p>\n<p>The stagecraft crew built an authentic revision of the Lapin Agile (translated to the \u201cNimble Rabbit\u201d), the cabaret where Einstein and Picasso meet. The French bar makes for a cozy set- ting with the use of European wood finish and jagged edges as appropriate touches.<\/p>\n<p>However, the viewer doesn\u2019t realize the set\u2019s architectural disproportion until the actors come onstage and nearly become microscopic.<\/p>\n<p>With zany acting, an aesthetically-pleasing light show, and a set that would make the late E.
