His first collection of poetry was published in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>Critics have described the book as \u201clyrical dreams\u201d and \u201cgifts.\u201d But Hettich, a creative writing professor at the Wolfson Campus, doesn\u2019t let the accolades get to his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like it, but I don\u2019t take it too seriously,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hettich believes that writing is important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI write every day,\u201d Hettich said. \u201cSome days I\u2019m inspired, other days I\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hettich already has plans for his next book\u00a0<em>The Animals Beyond Us<\/em>. It\u2019s scheduled for release in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Octavio Roca, the interim chair of the Arts and Philosophy Department at the North Campus, was exposed to dance at an early age.<\/p>\n<p>Roca\u2019s mom danced for the \u201cBallet de Pro-Arte Musical\u201d in Cuba. At age five, he watched his first ballet, Giselle.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Roca whose music and dance critiques have appeared in\u00a0<em>The San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Miami New Times<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Washington Times<\/em>, are expounding on his passion for the ballerina art form.<\/p>\n<p>His book\u00a0<em>Cuban Ballet<\/em>, which delves into the history of ballet on the Caribbean island, was released on Sept. 2.<\/p>\n<p>Among Roca\u2019s subjects in the book are the famed dance company Alicia Alonso\u2019s Ballet Nacional de Cuba and respected international balleerinas, the Feij\u00f3o sisters, Lorena and Lorna. The sisters grace the cover of Cuban Ballet.<\/p>\n<p>There is some politics involved in the book, partly because it deals with Cuba, however, the book does not revolve around it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis book should read like a novel that happens to be true,\u201d Roca said. \u201cYou are poor when you don\u2019t take advantage of the arts; when you embrace the arts, it makes life better.\u201d Roca said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Miami Dade College professor, Michael Hettich, will be reading from his new book\u00a0Like Happiness\u00a0on Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. at Books &amp; Books, 265 Aragon Ave., in Coral Gables.
