She is currently a morning reporter at WSVN 7.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to joining WSVN, she worked as a general assignment reporter at WBBH in Fort Myers and WCJB TV 20, in Gainesville, FL. De Armas graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in journalism and from the North Campus Honors College. She attended high school at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy.<\/p>\n<p>During her career, de Armas has interviewed many dignitaries including former United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke, and journalist and political correspondent Larry Kane.<\/p>\n<p>Her work has garnered her an AP Award for her exclusive coverage on Zac Reyna\u2019s battle against a brain-eating amoeba<\/p>\n<p>De Armas gained a lot of her early experience at <em>The Reporter<\/em> where she conducted interviews, wrote stories and created video packages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing part of <em>The Reporter<\/em> also taught me the importance of being ethical while reporting,\u201d de Armas said. \u201cIt polished my skills with working in a team, and it just really allowed me to confirm that I wanted to be a journalist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is excited about participating in the Journalism Speaker Series after attending many of those events while studying at North Campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHearing from professionals was so so important. I learned a lot. So to be on the stage now, hopefully inspiring students myself, is surreal,\u201d de Armas said. \u201cI always hope to encourage students who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism, by being honest and sharing my experience with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The remaining participants for this school year\u2019s MDC Journalism Speaker Series are <em>Washington Post<\/em> graphics editor, Lazaro Gamio, NBC 6 reporter, Melissa Adan, and <em>El Nuevo Herald<\/em> reporter, Sergio C\u00e1ndido. All of the speakers served as editors for the Miami Dade College student newspapers in the past six years.<\/p>\n<p>The MDC Journalism Speaker Series was launched in February 2008 to create an exchange and learning opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. To date, 52 journalists have participated in the series.<\/p>\n<p>The programs include a presentation by the journalists and a 15-minute question and answer session.
