{"id":9410,"date":"2016-11-19T21:01:34","date_gmt":"2016-11-20T02:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=9410"},"modified":"2021-04-06T14:59:49","modified_gmt":"2021-04-06T18:59:49","slug":"lady-sharks-volleyball-team-bring-home-state-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/lady-sharks-volleyball-team-bring-home-state-title\/","title":{"rendered":"Lady Sharks Volleyball Team Bring Home State Title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Miami Dade College women\u2019s volleyball team won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefcsaa.com\/landing\/index\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Florida College System Activities Association<\/span><\/a> State Tournament in early November, one year after suffering through a 13-17 season. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is MDC\u2019s 43rd state championship in volleyball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel good. It\u2019s a great accomplishment since we didn\u2019t even make it last year to the state tournament,\u201d said Lady Sharks Head Coach Origenes \u201cKiko\u201d Benoit. \u201cComing back this year to win it all is awesome.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lady Sharks swept Santa Fe College 3-0 in the championship. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t exactly easy, but we had the situation under control. We were pretty concentrated and focused on what we had to do and that gave us the results we wanted\u201d said Camila Hernandez, the team\u2019s starting libero. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/freshman-international-experience-adds-flare-lady-sharks-volleyball-team\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Massiel Matos<\/span><\/a>, one of the Lady Shark\u2019s top performers, is in the top five in the National Junior College Athletic Association rankings in three statistical categories: fourth \u00a0in serving aces per set (0.69), second in kills per set (4.73) and second in points per set (5.7). \u00a0She was named All-Southern Conference First Team, \u00a0FCSAA All-State, FCSAA All-Tournament \u00a0and was named the tournament\u2019s Most Outstanding Player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sun Wenting, an outside hitter and native of Heilongjiang, China, took home All-Southern Conference First Team and FCSAA All-Tournament Team honors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matos and Wenting lead the team in kills with 383 and 238 respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We play like one team,&#8221; Wenting said. &#8220;[We play as one person].&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hernandez received All-Southern Conference First Team and FCSAA All-Tournament Team honors. Hernandez ranked fourth in the NJCAA \u00a0for digs per set with a 6.98 average. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manuela Vargas, the starting setter for the Lady Sharks, born and raised in Colombia, won FCSAA All-Tournament and All-Southern Conference Second Team honors. Vargas led the team in assists (703) and was ranked sixth in the NJCAA in assists per set with an 11.72 average.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deborah Constanzo and Naimir Garcia won All-Southern Conference Second Team honors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constanzo, a right side hitter and native of the Dominican Republic, leads the team in total blocks (60), blocks per set (0.71 blocks per set), and is third on the team in kills (140) and hitting percentage (.336).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Benoit was named the 2016 NJCAA Region 8\/FCSAA State Coach of the Year. This is Benoit\u2019s ninth State Coach of the Year award since taking over as head coach of the Lady Sharks in 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lady Sharks are now 19-5 overall, with a 6-2 conference record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it shows the hard work that we did as a team, and the dedication that they have,\u201d Benoit said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Miami Dade College women\u2019s volleyball team won the Florida College System Activities Association State Tournament in early November, one year after suffering through a 13-17 season. \u00a0 It is MDC\u2019s 43rd state championship in volleyball. \u201cI feel good.
