Daniela Hernandez, a School for Advanced Studies<\/span><\/strong><\/a> senior at North Campus, started an organization called ShareJoy that focuses on helping impoverished children in Kenya acquire the resources needed to receive an education. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShareJoy\u2019s goal is to be able to help designated groups of children get an education,\u201d \u00a0Hernandez said. <\/span><\/p>\n

She was inspired by the kind generosity of others while being treated for Crohn\u2019s disease, an immune system deficiency that causes the immune system to attack the digestive system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her organization started as a service-learning project for her classes and grew into a small, self-run project funded by her own efforts. The goods include clothes, meals, medical necessities and shoes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The donations are shipped through mission trips associated with Ekklesia Church, a local Christian church that sends the goods collected, including clothes, meals and medical necessities to South America and the Caribbean. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hernandez plans to host more events and hopes to make her organization a non-profit in the future. <\/span><\/p>\n
