The Reporter Selects New Briefing Editor For 2026-27 School Year

Nicole Vergara, a mass communication student at Wolfson Campus, has been promoted to briefing editor of The Reporter.

The 19-year-old will lead a team of seven writers. She will assign, edit and write content on a weekly basis.

“Ive been a part of The Reporter for a year,” Vergara said. “Being able to have a leadership position where I can help guide other staff writers to write for this section is honestly a great opportunity.”

Vergara, who is in The Honors College, started as a briefing writer for The Reporter in the summer of 2025, before she was promoted to the news section in October.

She has written about a 68-year old former nightclub manager who returned to college after a nearly five-decade long hiatus, two journalism students who won the  $1,250 NAHJ South Florida scholarship, and about a conversation club that was formed to help students learn English.

Vergara graduated from Maritime and Science Technology Academy in 2025 where she served as editor-in-chief of the school’s yearbook during her senior year. She aspires to work in public relations for a fashion or beauty brand and be a freelance writer to tell people’s stories.
