These Five Fashion Trends From The Early 2000s Are Back

Fashion trends from the past always come back in style. We’ve seen it with fashion from the 1970s and 1990s returnnow it’s the 2000’s turn.

Trends from the 2000s have always been seen by the public as ‘tacky’ and ‘trashy,’ but thanks to apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest, that style is back with a twist known as Y2K.

Previously, Y2K was synonymous with the change of the century, marked by futuristic style, technology, and metallic greys. Now, it’s a generalized term that refers to fashion trends from the 2000s.

Here is a list of five fashion fads that are back in style:

Juicy Couture Tracksuits

Juicy Couture was founded in 1997 by Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor.

After creating a custom-made velour tracksuit for singer Madonna in 2001, it quickly became one of the biggest fashion trends of the 2000s. The outfit was worn by celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

That trend came back recently, as Juicy Couture released a brand new line of velour tracksuits and celebrities such as Kylie Jenner wore it on an Instagram post.

Second-hand velour tracksuits can also be found on eBay and Depop, two of the best sites for buying second-hand clothing.

Mini Skirts

As Paris Hilton once said, “mini skirts should be the size of a belt.”

They were very popular in the 2000s and were worn by singers Rihanna and Christina Aguilera.

All types of mini skirts—denim, pleated, ruffled—were paired with smaller shirts (such as tube tops or cami tanks with lace), feeding into the club scene of the decade.

Now, its popularity has risen thanks to singers Ariana Grande and Madison Beer, who are constantly seen on Instagram and Tiktok wearing them.

Stores that are well known in the teenage fashion community—like Princess Polly, Forever 21, and PrettyLittleThing—carry them.

Low-Rise Jeans

For years, people have dreaded the return of low-rise jeans. This is due to the heightened popularity of the high-rise mom jeans in the 2010s.

Now they’ve returned, thanks to models like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, whose pictures wearing them are popular on Pinterest boards.

In the 2000s, low-rise jeans came in different styles, such as bedazzled, painted on, bootcut, straight, ripped, or even without pockets. They were sold by companies such as Baby Phat, Apple Bottom Jeans, and True Religion.

Celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Beyonce wore them to red carpet events.

Nowaday, low-rise jeans have a much simpler, straight-legged design. Regardless, it still has that Y2K charm to it. Stores like Lucky Brand carry a modernized version of it.

Baby Tees

Baby Tees are commonly known as cropped, tight-fitting T-shirts that have either a graphic, logo, or saying. They are named as such because of their size—they are usually made for little girls.

These tees were seen in films such as The Hot Chick (2002), which features April (played by Anna Faris) rocking a colorful, striped shirt with a picture of Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls, and Mean Girls (2004), which features Gretchen Wieners (played by Lacey Chabert) wearing a red Royal Punk tee in a scene.

Now, after being popularized by tiktokers like Charli D’Amelio and Camille Roth, baby tees are back in style.

Baby tees are sold by companies such as Brandy Melville, iGirl, and UNIF, whose shirts are heavily influenced by designs from the 2000s.

Shoulder Bags

Also known as the baguette bag or handbag, shoulder bags were popular in the 2000s.  Famously sold by Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Dooney and Bourke, they were worn by celebrities like actresses Hilary Duff and Nicole Richie to red carpets events or Hollywood parties.

Though they seem small, shoulder bags surprisingly fit various items, such as a cell phone and wallet.

With the trend returning, Dior re-released their famous monogrammed saddlebags and companies such as Urban Outfitters started releasing shoulder bags of their own.

Shoulder bags are often sported by social-media influencers Emma Chamberlain and Sydney and Devon Carlson.
