Urbana Wins Second Pinnacle Award In Two Years

For the second year in row, Urbana, the literary magazine at Eduardo J. Padrón Campus, won a first-place Pinnacle Award from the College Media Association in the two-year literary magazine category.

Results were announced during the Fall National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 27.

Winners were selected based on work published during the 2021-22 school year.

“I’m very proud of my students,” said Emily Sendin, who served as Urbana’s advisor during the 2021-2022 school year. “The team was really focused on working together towards a goal.”

Urbana’s fifteenth edition emphasized the rites of passage. The cover featured a quinceañera princess created by Art Director Camila Ramirez.

The artwork featured accounts of overcoming trauma and experiences such as first kisses and graduation.

For Urbanites like Maria Alejandra Albarracin, the magazine served as a catalyst for creativity.

After struggling to find an outlet to explore her interest in creative writing, Albarracin joined Urbana. She edited the blog, podcast and wrote sections of the magazine during her freshman year.

Now, the second-year mass communications student is the publication’s co-editor-in-chief.

The magazine also won second-place individual awards for Best Social Media Strategy and Best Social Media Presence.

Urbana has taught me to express myself in writing more,” Albarracin said. “It was like something new that helped me get out of my shell.”

Kendall Campus’ Miambiance and North Campus’ AXIS placed second and third respectively in the two-year literary magazine of the year category

Miambiance also earned an honorable mention for Best Photo Illustration.

Ammy Sanchez, who served as The Reporter’s editor-in-chief last academic year, earned a second-place honor in the Best Profile award for her story on Noah Thomas—an 11-year-old prodigy taking college courses at Kendall Campus.
