The Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives is screening Cinematic Florida: The 1970s, a weekly showing of 1970s-era movies filmed in Florida.
Screenings will begin on July 9 at 1 p.m. and continue weekly through July 30. The showings will be hosted at the Wolfson Archives, 300 N.E. Second Ave, Room 8401.
Featured movies in the series include The Heartbreak Kid (1972) on July 9, Lenny (1974) on July 16, Black Sunday (1977) on July 23 and Frogs (1972) on July 30.
After each movie, archives manager Lou Ellen Kramer will host discussions and share insight about the significance and impacts of the films on Miami’s cultural history.
“Cinema in the 1970s was considered a new era for Hollywood filmmaking, allowing for more creative freedom and risk-taking storytelling featuring social criticism,” Kramer said. “This series gives us an opportunity to compare the films with what was actually happening in South Florida, as depicted in the archival news footage in the Wolfson Archives.”
The screenings are free and open to the general public. Attendants are welcome to bring food or snacks with them.
