Maydee Martinez, a recent Wolfson Campus graduate, received the Hidden Hero Award on Aug. 11.

Hidden Hero Awards are given to those who invest time to improve their community and take responsibility by creating an enduring change for students nationwide through the Andrew Goodman Vote Everywhere program.

Martinez was an Andrew Goodman representative for almost a year at Miami Dade College, registering more than 700 people to vote. She is also the co-founder of Democracy YOUnited, an organization devoted to youth civic engagement across the county.

Martinez was very surprised when she found out about the award, claiming that, usually, it’s given to older people.

She also received private scholarships from The Humana Foundation, Miami Bayside Foundation, and The Martyrs Scholarship Award in Memory of Pablo Morales, that will cover most of her expenses at Georgetown University, where she’ll start this Fall to major in sociology and government.

“You don’t have to get an award to stop, follow your passion,” said Martinez about continuing her activism for democracy.
