Wynwood Goes Nuts For Doughnuts

In the soul of Miami— often referred to as Wynwood— an artisanal donut shop has created a name for themselves, bringing in tourists and natives alike.

“I’ve been looking for a great coffee and donut shop,” Marian Moreno, a customer said. “I saw them online and wanted to try it.”

What started back in December of 2015 as a weekend camper pop-up for locals, has now grown into an everyday brick-and-mortar filled weekly with new creations.

They keep a solid six selections all year round, and offer weekly flavors depending on what inspires them. The Salty Donut has become a staple in Wynwood while also keeping local businesses in the loop by partnering with them. A top seller, the Maple Bacon, uses pork from Miami Smokers also located in the Wynwood area.

“We like to do collabs with a lot of local businesses,” said Jay Aveiga, the general manager of The Salty Donut. “We have a really neighborly situation.”

A popular seasonal selection that caused a frenzy was the sticky bun doughnut, which partnered with Knaus Berry Farm, located in Homestead. The limited time dessert created mile long lines.

There are numerous coffee selections that complement each doughnut. The salted caramel latte and cereal milk latte are among the fan favorites.

“I’ve been here about eight or ten times,” said Alan Bellando. “My family loves them because there’s always something different.”  

Not only is the taste of The Salty Donut amazing, but the interior decor creates an aesthetically pleasing environment for customers. Open windows, brick walls and wooden seats create the perfect background to enjoy artisanal doughnuts with friends.

“The design of the store is so beautiful,” said Gina Molinares. “I love the environment.”

To accommodate doughnut junkies who don’t want to drive to Wynwood, The Salty Donut is now available six days a week on UberEats and will soon be available on the Postmates app.

The popularity of the store has caused other doughnut shops to pop up, but The Salty Donut remains a top option.

“I think it’s the attention we put into every doughnut,” Aveiga said.

As the shop continues to emerge, it has already been honored as a top two best selling doughnut in the country on the UberEats app and best doughnut in Miami by the Miami New Times.
