Miami Dade College will move classes online because of the coronavirus outbreak, according to a statement released today at 8:50 p.m.
Classes will be canceled from March 13-29 so the College can prepare for the transition to remote learning. Employees will continue to work during the two-week period.
After March 29, students will use Blackboard, the College’s online learning platform, to complete work.
Six of MDC’s campuses will remain open during the time, except for the Medical and West Campus.
West Campus is being shut down until Monday after a student reported they were diagnosed with a non-threatening strain of coronavirus, according to Juan Mendieta, director of communications at MDC. He added that the student has not been on campus since March 5.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are seven coronavirus strains, four of which are mild.
The property will be sanitized tomorrow, and employees will return back to work on Monday.
“The strain the student has is not COVID-19 and not considered dangerous,” Mendieta said. “In an abundance of caution, we will clean the campus where the student attended.”
