AXIS, The Literary Arts Magazine At North Campus, Wins Pacemaker Award

For the second time in three years, AXIS, the literary arts magazine at North Campus, was selected as a Pacemaker award winner in the two-year schools category.

The award is the top national prize for literary magazines. They are awarded by the Associated Collegiate Press.

Winners were announced virtually on Oct. 22 during the Fall National College Media Convention.

Entries were based on content produced during the 2019-20 school year. Natalie Aguilar served as the magazine’s editor-in-chief and Maria Mastrocristino was the lead designer.

“Crafted amidst the COVD-19 global pandemic, Volume 17 is very special to AXIS,” said Izamara Zamora, the magazine’s editor-in-chief this year. “To me, winning a Pacemaker is more than acknowledging beauty and technique. It is about uplifting individuals who tirelessly bring their imagination to life no matter the circumstances and celebrating them.”

The magazine features works of prose, poetry, art, and photography from students enrolled at their respective campus. It was created in 2002 by former advisers Lisa Shaw and Elena Perez-Mirabal.

AXIS has been nominated for a Pacemaker for the past three years and last won the award in 2018. It’s also a finalist for the College Media Association’s Pinnacle Award in the Two-Year Literary Magazine of the Year category.

Winners for that will be announced Oct. 23 at the ACP/CMA Fall National College Media Convention that is being held virtually this year.
