Former Reporter Editor Lands Internship At The Washington Post
Heidi Perez-Moreno, who served as editor-in-chief of The Reporter during the 2019-20 school year, has been selected as a summer intern at The Washington Post.
The 22-year-old will write stories for the Metro section, focusing on crime, government and education in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. She starts her post on June 5.
“It’s an honor to work at a newsroom that I’ve looked up to for so long,” Perez-Moreno said. “I can’t wait to get started.”
She is currently interning at WUNC—North Carolina’s public radio station. Last semester, Perez-Moreno served as an editorial intern at The Assembly—a digital magazine covering politics and legal issues in North Carolina.
This past summer, she interned at the L.A. Times En Español, covering stories focused on the Latino community, such as her feature on East L.A.’s Queer Mercado.
Two years ago, Perez-Moreno interned as a reporting fellow at the Texas Tribune and as a Spanish reporter for North Carolina’s La Voz De Chatham.
During her time at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she has served as a university desk reporter, co-diversity, equity and inclusion officer, assistant audience engagement editor and the editorial managing editor at The Daily Tar Heel, the school’s independent student newspaper.
Perez-Moreno started her journalism career at The Reporter writing for the news, briefing and sports sections. During her time at the paper, she was named the Associated Collegiate Press’ Reporter of the Year in the two-year colleges’ category and was selected as a College Media Association Pinnacle Awards finalist in the Best Breaking News Story category.
She currently serves as president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists student chapter at UNC. Perez-Moreno is expected to earn a bachelor’s degree in journalism in May.
