How Miami Dade College Has Opened My Life Opportunities

I always found it difficult to feel heard when I was growing up. 

That all changed when I enrolled at Miami Dade College last year. 

All of my professors at North Campus have gone the extra mile in ensuring each student feels heard and accepted in the classroom by creating long-lasting one-on-one connections. 

An example of this is my speech and communications professor Yane Nemeroff. He has kept me engaged with his creative lectures that encourage teamwork through group activities like playing the telephone game. 

Professor Nemeroff, who knows all of his students by name, is adept at identifying when someone needs help.

His close connection to his students has been the most encouraging aspect of his class. He has helped me push myself to overcome academic and personal hardships by encouraging me to be more confident and step out of my comfort zone through public speaking and socializing. 

As a child of immigrant parents, having instructors like him encourages me to make the most out of the education and resources that are provided to me. 

I now have the confidence to enroll in more classes and engage in social events like being a speaker for my campus’ Hispanic Heritage Club. I’ve also developed the self-confidence to speak at public events held as part of my classes. 

Aside from academics, the student life department also plays a key role in making me feel welcome on campus. 

Coming from a tightly-knight high school, it was tough entering new surroundings.

It was a season in my life where anxiety and early signs of depression took place. However, after joining clubs and organizations like the Hispanic Heritage, Bible Salvation and The Reporter, my negative feelings dissipated. I found places where I belonged. 

Through each extracurricular activity, I’ve learned to value the diversity our campus offers.

By participating in club events and with the support of my professors, I’ve learned to connect with others to achieve my full potential.

The College has given me a home and a place to grow. That’s why I encourage students to maximize the resources and education our institution offers.
