Miami Dade College is canceling classes starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday as the west coast of Florida braces for Hurricane Milton, a Category 4 storm with 145 mph sustained winds.
Although Milton—currently projected to make landfall in Tampa late Wednesday night or Thursday morning as a Category 3 storm—is not expected to hit Miami directly, it will bring inclement weather to the region, including four to seven inches of rain and flash flooding.
Miami-Dade County is under a tropical storm watch.
In an email to students, faculty and staff Tuesday evening, MDC President Madeline Pumariega said: “All classes and regular operations are expected to resume as scheduled on Friday.”
Milton is following a similar path as Hurricane Helene, which hit Florida’s Big Bend coast as a Category 4 storm approximately two weeks ago. It impacted Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee, killing more than 220 people.
Miami Dade College is the largest two-year school in the state with more than 100,000 students spread across eight campuses. Its most southern campus is located in Homestead and its most northern site is on northwest 27th avenue and 113th street.
