The Florida College System Activities Association recognized Homestead Campus student Karla Collazo as the January Student of the Month for her outstanding leadership skills, academic success, and community service commitment.

Motivated by helping others, Collazo, a 17-year-old freshman at Miami Dade College, led a clothing drive to donate clean clothes to the homeless. She decorated collection boxes for youth, adolescents, and the elderly, and then placed them around campus. After collecting donations for a month, Collazo was able to donate 15 bags of clothing to the Chapman Partnership Homeless Shelter.

Born and raised in Cuba, Collazo came to the United States three years ago. After adjusting to being in a new country, Collazo was determined to take advantage of the opportunities and resources she is given that aren’t available in her native country.

Graduating at the top 15 percent of her class at South Dade Senior High School, she is currently a pre-health science major with a 4.0 GPA. Also a part of the pre-health science club at Homestead Campus, Collazo strives to become a doctor.

“I want to go to a medical school and become a doctor to fully get to help others get better,” Collazo said. “The awe of discovering the human body, and the gratitude for helping someone through a difficult situation are the main reasons why I want to become a doctor.”
