Equality Should Not Be Up For Debate Or Majority Vote

Illustration.President Barack Obama is the first sitting president to openly state that he is for same sex marriage.

What took so long?

Did people really not pay attention in their American History class? The constitution says that “All men are created equal.” I don’t see an asterisk saying, except homosexuals.

Obama has received serious backlash for saying this. Everyone wants to attack him and say that he is the one on the wrong side of history. No! The Republicans are the ones on the wrong side of history.

“Oh but more than 30 states banned gay marriage, so it’s not popular,” you might be thinking. Let me tell you how elections like this go. Not everyone turns out to vote. The younger voters that support gay marriage don’t vote as often as the older voters that are dead set against it.

For example, let’s say there is an election and 500,000 people are able to vote on gay marriage. Maybe 200,000 of those people will actually show up to vote. And of those people, 150,000 are dead set against gay marriage. Why? Because if something like that passes it changes laws. If it doesn’t, then everything stays status quo, so anti-gay people have more to lose. Pro-gay people only have something to gain.

So what ends up happening? The vote to ban gay marriage gets 75% of the votes and passes. Even if 450,000 support gay marriage in the polls, the election results say that it should be banned.

Gay marriage is being accepted more, and I have all the hope that once these intolerant older folk start dying off then we will see more tolerant laws. I know that gay marriage will be legal one day; it’s just a matter of how rapidly we as a nation want to ‘evolve’.

The folks on the right (Rush Limbaugh and FOX News) say that this is a losing issue, but it’s not. We’ve actually made progress. Jon Stewart of The Daily Show even pointed out that five years ago the right said that gay marriage was the most divisive social issue of our generation and would lead to people marrying turtles Yeah that’s not a typo, turtles.

If they want to keep the sanctity of marriage, make divorce illegal because it’s up to 50 percent, and I’m sure that’s not accepted in the bible (to break a promise you made to God to be with that person until death do you part).

I respect that some people have deep religious views against it, but I have always said that religion is no justification for injustice. If you don’t like gays or marriage between them, here’s a tip, stay away from them. If they make you feel uncomfortable then don’t associate with them. There are lots of people I don’t like and the only reason I don’t like them is because I’ve spent time with them and they annoy me. What I find helps is just staying away.

I am not gay myself, but it hurts me when I see others think they can tell people what to do.

I’m for any type of equality, for whomever. You should be judged based on what you can do (in regards to a job), and the content of your character (in regards to how you interact with people). Equality should not be up for debate or up for majority vote.
