Amalia Abraham To Receive Barry Goldwater Scholarship
Amalia Abraham, a biology student in the Honors College at Eduardo J. Padrón Campus, was selected as a Barry Goldwater Scholarship recipient.
The prestigious scholarship awards up to $7,500 to college sophomores and juniors in the STEM field.
“It’s been like a dream because I never thought I would get it,” Abraham said.
Abraham lived in Cuba until she was 13 years old. She moved to the Dominican Republic for three years and arrived in the United States in 2016 during her sophomore year of high school.
She attended John A. Ferguson Senior High School in 2019. Upon graduation, she joined the Bridge to the Baccalaureate program between Miami Dade College and the University of Miami, which encourages underrepresented students to pursue PhDs in the biomedical field.
Her extracurricular activities include serving as the web designer for Urbana, the student-led literary magazine at Padrón Campus, and vice president of the campus’ Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society.
Abraham, who currently has a 4.0 GPA, is expected to graduate from Miami Dade College at the end of this spring semester. She plans to continue studying biology with a focus on biochemistry and molecular biology.
