Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program Offers $4,000 For Undergraduate Students
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for undergraduates of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad.
The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study and intern destinations and supports those in underrepresented fields such as sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities.
More than 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need. The average award is approximately $4,000.
Students who receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad are then eligible to receive a Critical Need Language Award from the program of $8,000.
To be eligible for the Gilman Scholarship Program, the students must be a U.S. citizen and an undergraduate currently enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S. All applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of applying or proof they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of abroad.
The deadline and timeline application process are divided into three programs. The Spring Program generally starts between Dec. 15 and April 15. The Summer Program begins between May 1 and Aug. 1. The Fall and Academic Year Programs start between July 15 and Oct. 15.
