Brown Has Lady Sharks On Three Game Winning Streak

Sitting the first five games of the season due to academic issues was difficult for Miami Dade College forward Imari Brown. She saw her teammates lose all five of those games by an average of 12.4 points.

But since her return to the court, the Lady Sharks (3-7 and 2-1 in Southern Conference play) have won have won the last three of five games.

The 5-foot-10 sophomore who plays mostly small forward is averaging 15 points and 6.6 rebounds a game this season including a monstrous game against Sante Fe College on Nov. 22 that included 28 points and 11 rebounds.

Brown has averaged 18.3 points and eight rebounds during the Lady Sharks current three game winning streak.

AMANDA LINARES \ THE REPORTER Back On The Court: Sophomore Imari Brown, a transfer from Central Arizona College, is averaging 15 points and 6.6 rebounds a game for the Lady Sharks after sitting out the team’s first five games due to academic issues.

“She plays the game with passion and brings energy and beast mode as a very talented, strong athlete who can finish,” said Lady Sharks Head Basketball Coach Susan Summons.

Brown had an impressive high school basketball career at Duarte High School in California.

During her four years on the women’s basketball team, she averaged 18.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, 8.4 steals and 7.8 assists per game.

After high school, she took her talents to Central Arizona College where she averaged 13.2 and 4.1 rebounds in 33 games as a freshman. The team got knocked out of the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament in the semifinals.

Despite the success of reaching the semifinals, Brown decided to transfer to MDC for her sophomore campaign because she wanted to play for Summons.

“It was hard for her father and I to let her go so far,” said Brown’s mother, Carla Brown. “We can’t get to any of her games being [that she is] so far away from home.”

Brown has not disappointed on the court. While her gritty, aggressive style is helping her fill out the stat sheet, she remains focused on a team oriented category.

“The number one thing I’d like to accomplish this year is getting a defensive player [of the year] award,” Brown said.

The Lady Sharks next home game is versus Baltimore City Community College at the Miami Dade College Lakes Shootout on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Theodore R. Gibson Health Center, 11011 S.W.104 St.  Admission to all games is free.
