Campus Services Employee Recovering After Being Struck By A Vehicle At North Campus

Jose Garcia, a campus services employee at North Campus, who has worked at Miami Dade College for more than 40 years, is recovering from injuries he sustained after he was struck by a vehicle in lot 16.

The incident happened on August 6. According to police and public safety reports, as Garcia was walking through the parking lot he was struck by a Honda Pilot that was reversing. The vehicle was driven by professor Manuel De Jesus Arana Rosainz, who was cited for improper backing.

Garcia, 77, was transported to Hialeah Hospital after he complained of back, head and leg injuries. He sustained three broken ribs, a fractured femur and cerebral hemorrhaging. Garcia is currently undergoing rehabilitation for his legs at HealthSouth in Broward County.

According to Randel Carr, Director of Campus Support Services at North Campus, Garcia is recovering well and plans on returning to work.

“Garcia has worked at MDC for 42 years and has barely missed a day,” Carr said. “This is his life.”

His colleagues look forward to having him back on campus.

Irmina Diaz, an accounts specialist at North Campus, described Garcia as a hard-working man.

“He is a very decent person, very humanitarian,” Diaz said. “ I would tell him that he was like my father.”
