Center Looks To Transfer Her Winning Way
Adenike Dawodu was looking for a change in scenery. Something that would offer her more than the small tranquil Tennessee community she was living in. Her search eventually led her to Miami Dade College and she’s loving everything South Florida has to offer her.
“It was very boring in Tennessee and I didn’t feel excited as I do in Miami,” Dawodu said.
A transfer from Union University in Jackson, Tenn., the sophomore center is one of the Lady Sharks’ newest additions.
During her freshman year at Union Dawodu helped the Lady Bulldogs finish runners up at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division I tournament. Dawodu’s team ended up losing to Oklahoma City 69-48 in the championship game.
Lady Sharks coach Susan Summons said Dawodu is bringing a wealth of talent and experience to this year’s team.
“We are excited that she has joined our winning tradition here at Miami Dade, she brings a wealth of talent, leadership, maturity, and a good work ethic,” Summons said. “These are all the good characteristics of having a championship player and season.”
The move from Tennessee to Miami was nothing for Dawodu. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Dawodu has found Miami’s meltingpot refreshing.
“I feel happy that I get to interact with different cultures,” Dawodu said. “I have even come across a few students from Nigeria since I’ve been in Miami so that made me feel at home.”
Dawodu is hoping her 6-foot-3 frame will help her be a force in the post for the Lady Sharks this season.
“[I’m always] being patient and taking advantage of whatever my opponent gives me,” Dawodu said of her strategy in the post.
Last year at Union, she averaged 10.3 points and 2.8 rebounds a game. But the business administration thinks she can do better at MDC.
“I’m always looking for something to improve my game on,” Dawodu said. “Hard work and dedication to my craft will allow my game to excel and reach different heights.”
Reaching the next level will be good for her sake and the Lady Sharks.
