Cross-Platform Multiplayer Might Be The Next Big Thing For Gamers

Recently Microsoft mentioned that they are open to allowing cross-platform multiplayer with any online gaming platforms. This idea would mean that players on Xbox One and Windows 10 that use Xbox Live will have the option to play with users from different online multiplayer networks. Without giving specific names, Sony issued a statement to GameSpot in response to this idea.

“PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” said the statement from Sony. “We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play.”

So, what is cross-platform multiplayer? Well, cross-platforming multiplayer basically means players are able to play with other players online on different platforms, like Xbox and PlayStation. For example, in Rocket League players on their PC are able to compete against players on PlayStation and vice versa.

This is something gamers have dreamed about, and now there is a possibility for that dream to come true. In fact, many online gamers are excited that they may get to compete with other platform players.

“If this were to happen this would create a better gaming community. You wouldn’t have to worry about your friends [who] have an Xbox while you have a PS4,” Nykole Bassett, a 20-year-old Miami Dade College student said.

Cross-platform multiplayer can revolutionize online gaming, and it may be a great idea. However, although there are many good things that can come from this, some gamers believe this may be a bad idea.

“Some games have exclusive items for certain consoles,” MDC student Christopher Abanto said. “For example, Destiny has added exclusive weapons for PlayStation players and not Xbox. Although this may be a good idea, it won’t exactly work out.”

Cross-platform multiplayer has been a rare opportunity for gamers to experience. Most of the time, when a game does offer cross-platform multiplayer, the two platforms are usually a PC or Mac. Playstation games such as Terraria, Helldivers, and Street Fighter X Tekken, have allowed cross-platform multiplayer between PlayStation consoles. However, not many console games offer cross-platform multiplayer across different console networks.

At the moment, this is only an idea that has a possibility to occur. Although both companies expressed being open to this concept, there is still a possibility that it may not happen. Gamers are excited to see how this plays out and what it means for the future of gaming
