FKA Twigs’ Eusexua Ushers Listeners Into A New Feeling

British singer-songwriter FKA Twigs has always been committed to self-expression. With her background in cabaret and an underground circus, she embodies the essence of a performer.

That diversity can be seen in her latest project, Eusexua, a word coined by the singer. Eusexua refers to a momentary transcendent experience when consuming profoundly moving media, leading to a sense of losing oneself.

The album is a love letter from Twigs, explaining how Eusexua was born from attending raves in Prague and severely connecting with the music.

The title track welcomes listeners into the world of Eusexua. With synths being its main component in production, it’s a gateway to the world she built for this album.

Eusexua vividly portrays the desire to break free from life’s responsibilities. The production of the title track, Eusexua, mirrors the monotony of the corporate world. Its repetitiveness is reminiscent of mindless typing on a keyboard, with the glitching calling for freedom to pursue spontaneity.

The music video for Eusexua, which includes a snippet of another track entitled Drums of Death, also embodies the desire to break free. It begins with a life devoid of art and freedom of expression until everybody begins to malfunction, welcoming carefreeness and the feeling of Eusexua.

There is also an underlying sense of vulnerability, especially in the song Keep It, Hold It. The mellowed-out ambience of the song highlights the particularly difficult nature of moving on from heartbreak.

Keep It, Hold It’s repetitive lyrics serve as a chant for Twigs who is frustrated at how long it’s taking her to move on. The chorus feels like the final breaking point before collapsing into tears, asking what one must do to fully return to the person they once were.

FKA Twigs is both vulnerable and fun on this album, with a good variety in the production and lyrics. Eusexua offers a little bit for everyone, even including a cheerful dance track: Childlike Things

Childlike Things, which is in collaboration with rapper Kanye West’s 11-year-old daughter, North West, embodies a youthful spirit.

While not a fan favorite, it is entirely on theme with the song. The track is determined to embody the dreamlike nature of a child with bouncy beats and a melody that is reminiscent of an old toy phone.

Eusexua is clearly a passion project for Twigs. The album showcases her devotion to delivering an experience to her listeners. Its nature is rare in this current age, where artists are chasing virality via social media platforms and are not focusing on creating meaningful music.

The love, creativity and sensibility are what make Eusexua one of the most immersive albums to be released recently.
