Former Reporter Editor Lands Internship With The Texas Tribune
Heidi Perez-Moreno, who served as editor-in-chief of The Reporter during the 2019-20 school year, has been selected for a summer internship with The Texas Tribune.
Perez-Moreno, 20, will begin the paid internship on June 7.
“It’s a dream to work with a [news organization] that I’ve been a fan of for so many years,” Perez-Moreno said. “I’m excited to work with so many talented reporters and editors this summer to cover local and state politics in Texas.”
In January, Perez-Moreno, won two first-place awards from the Florida College System Publications Association for in-depth reporting and sports writing. The stories centered on the cost of hiring a new college president and a feature on a men’s basketball player who was adopted from an orphanage in Haiti when he was five years old.
Last October, Perez-Moreno was named Reporter Of The Year in the two-year colleges’ category by the Associated Collegiate Press. Perez-Moreno led The Reporter through its coverage of the coronavirus pandemic and started the publication’s bi-weekly newsletter last April.
In addition, she was a College Media Association Pinnacle Awards finalist in the Best Breaking News Story category for a story she co-wrote about the Board of Trustees’ decision to reboot the College’s presidential search in July of 2019.
Perez-Moreno was also selected to participate in The Chronicle of Higher Education’s 2019 Fall Reporting Workshop. The two-day project took place in Washington, D.C. and taught students how to cover higher education and navigate public records.
After graduating from Wolfson Campus in August of 2020 with an associate’s degree in journalism, Perez-Moreno transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she is majoring in journalism. She has written for The Daily Tar Heel — the student newspaper at UNC — since August and became their co-diversity, equity and inclusion officer last month.
Perez-Moreno is scheduled to graduate from UNC in Spring 2022 semester.
