Former Reporter Editor Lands Job At WLRN News
Ammy Sanchez, who served as The Reporter’s editor-in-chief during the 2021-2022 school year, was hired as the morning edition producer at WLRN News—NPR’s South Florida member station.
Sanchez, who starts on Aug. 28, will work alongside the morning anchor to write reports for the newscasts, fill in as anchor when needed and ensure that the morning show runs smoothly.
“I’m really excited to be able to work in a place with incredibly talented people and to be able to grow a lot more as a journalist,” the 20-year-old said.
Sanchez started at WLRN as an intern in the fall of 2022, where she reported and produced stories about South Florida. For the past eight months, Sanchez worked as a freelancer at the station and served as the summer producer for the South Florida Roundup, WLRN’s Friday afternoon show.
In July, she participated in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Student Project, a week-long training initiative in reporting, writing, editing and videography.
This past January, Sanchez was one of five people selected for Next Generation Radio, NPR’s Digital Journalism Project. There she completed a radio and print story about Miami Beach’s Bettant Bakery & Café.
Her journalism career began at The Reporter where she wrote for the news, sports, forum and briefing sections. During her time at the newspaper, she earned first-place awards in News Story, Feature Story, Sports Writing and Humor Writing categories from the Florida College System Publication Association. In 2022, Sanchez received second place in the Best Profile category from the College Media Association and was a finalist for Reporter of the Year.
Sanchez earned an associate’s degree in mass communications and journalism from North Campus in May of 2022 and is a rising senior studying communications at the Honors College at Florida International University.
“Ammy is the embodiment of what a student journalist should be,” said Manolo Barco, who serves as adviser to The Reporter. “She is curious, empathetic, cares and has the work ethic of an ant. WLRN is getting a gem.”
