Former Reporter Editor Selected For NAHJ Student Project

Reporter alumna Ammy Sanchez has been selected to participate in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Student Project

The week-long initiative trains participants in writing, reporting, editing, shooting and editing video during the 2023 NAHJ International Training Convention & Expo being held in Miami from July 12 to 15.

“I am incredibly thankful that I was selected because I was competing with people from the entire nation,” Sanchez said. “It’s going to be fun being surrounded by people who care about journalism.”

In January, Sanchez participated in NPR’s Next Generation Radio, a five-day digital journalism program that identifies and trains rising public media talent. For the cohort, the 20-year-old produced a feature story on Miami Beach’s Bettant Bakery & Café.

Last fall semester, she served as an intern at WLRN—the NPR South Florida member station. Sanchez reported, produced, wrote and narrated stories. She is currently a freelancer for WLRN.

Sanchez served as the editor-in-chief of The Reporter during the 2021-22 school year. During her tenure, she was a finalist in the College Media Association Reporter of the Year category and was awarded first-place in the news, feature and humor writing categories by the Florida College System Publications Association.

She earned an associate’s degree in mass communications and journalism from North Campus last May and is currently studying organizational communications at the Honors College at Florida International University.
