Fundraising Art Event Savors Cuban Cuisine
The Miami Dade College Museum of Art + Design will feature an evening with Las Hermanas Peláez, Ana Sofia and Carmen on May 6 at the Freedom Tower, 600 Biscayne Blvd. at 7 p.m.
The affair features a book talk and indulges in a cuisine pairing. Ana Sofia, a published author, will discuss her books The Cuban Table: A Celebration of Food and Flavors of History and her love of the food world. Carmen will perform her comic one-woman show RUM & COKE.
“It means the world to me to be able to host this event in the Freedom Tower where my grandparents were processed,” Carmen said. “It fills me with happiness.”
Ana Sofia is a blogger at Hungry Sofia, co-owner of La Filosofia, a stylish textile store in New York City based on her grandfather’s department store in Havana. Carmen, a filmmaker and performer, studied film at the American Academy for the Dramatic Arts in New York. In addition to the comic play RUM & COKE, she has starred in three independent films Stroll, Houseguest, and Last Hand Standing. Carmen wrote RUM & COKE with the purpose of expressing life’s challenges through the Cuban experience. The play has been featured in Miami, New York, Los Angeles and Massachusetts.
Entry ($100 for the general public, $75 for museum members) includes a signed copy of The Cuban Tale: A Celebration of Food.
