Get To Know Your 2024-25 Student Government Leaders

Miami Dade College students—here are your new Student Government Association leaders.

College-wide elections took place March 13 through March 20. Voting was held virtually through MDC’s election website. 

Elected officers were inducted on May 28 and will serve in their positions through the end of the spring 2025 semester.

Candidates had to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent, be enrolled in at least six credits at their respective campus, have a minimum of 2.5 GPA and maintain a clear academic conduct standing. 

Kendall Campus 

President: Yosdany Angulo-Cartas

ANGULO-CARTAS

Angulo-Cartas is an architecture student pursuing an associate’s degree at Kendall Campus who plans to host farm share food distribution events for the community and engagement activities for underserved youth. 

He also looks forward to having active participation in the Phi Theta Kappa honors society this year.

“I hope to help [students] by bringing them a sense of peace, knowing that they can come to us and ask for any type of help,” the 19-year-old said. 

Angulo-Cartas was originally selected as vice president, according to an email disseminated by Kendall Campus and an Instagram post uploaded by Kendall Campus’ SGA on March 22. In those posts, Isabella Valdes was announced as president. 

Valdes told The Reporter she will not be serving as president due to personal reasons.

North Campus 

President: Estefania Olaiz

OLAIZ

Olaiz is a 21-year-old biology and political science student in the Honors College. She hopes to increase accessibility to tutors and feminine hygiene products on campus. Olaiz, who founded the Latino Medical Student Association and serves as Phi Theta Kappa’s director of leadership and service, will be interning at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons this summer. 

“This position is a big responsibility, so I feel immensely privileged to have been

chosen by my peers to represent and voice their concerns,” Olaiz said.

Wolfson Campus 

President: Valentina Burgos

BURGOS

Burgos, 18, is a rising sophomore studying psychology in the Honors College. She aims to champion engagement, education and diversity at Wolfson Campus and will also serve as the communications manager for the STEM Student Association this school year. 

“This position signifies the responsibility of uniting the institution with its students,” Burgos said. “As a representative of the entire campus community, I am committed to elevating student voices and advocating for their needs both within and beyond the organization.”

Materan is a rising sophomore majoring in political science in the Honors College. The 20-year-old, who serves as the restaurant floor manager of Carne en Vara Express, hopes to increase community service initiatives at Padrón Campus.

“I believe our college, and specifically our campus, have a variety of resources and opportunities that I have the privilege of helping to promote to our students,” Materan said.

Medical Campus 

President: Shiba Gayle

Gayle, 34, is a nursing student seeking to create an environment where students and campus leaders can work together to positively impact the community. She also wants to expand community services opportunities. Gayle, who is a lead medical assistant at Mount Sinai Medical Center, serves a dual role as the SGA Board of Trustees representative.

“This position means a lot to me because it’s been my dream to become the SGA President since the first day I stepped foot on campus,” Gayle said. “It’s always been my passion to encourage everyone and I can finally use my love for helping others by guiding students to become a better version of themselves.”

Hialeah Campus 

President: Janiel Ojeda Barreras

Ojeda is a 19-year-old architecture student seeking to increase student engagement at Hialeah Campus. During his tenure, he will continue serving as the vice president of Over the Net, a pingpong club, and as treasurer of Zoological Observational Outreach Club, an organization aimed at raising awareness for wildlife. He also hopes to incorporate his architecture skills to build something useful for the College.

“I am highly committed to this community and consider it my home and wish for all students to feel the same,” Ojeda said.

West Campus 

President: Carlos Paez Jerviz

JERVIZ

Jerviz is a biology student looking to bridge the gap between administration and students. The 18-year-old, who serves as a student ambassador for the MDC Alumni Association, aims to promote diversity, inclusion, leadership development and community service at West Campus.

“With my cabinet, [I] want to improve engagement within the student body of our campus by making them aware of involvement opportunities,” Jerviz said.

Homestead Campus 

President: Sofia Bohorquez

BOHORQUEZ

Bohorquez, 19, is a rising sophomore studying computer science in the Honors College. She is the founder and vice president of Girls Who Code, a club aimed at supporting women in computer science, and wants to implement initiatives that encourage student participation on campus. 

“I hope to foster a stronger sense of community, create more opportunities for student involvement and leave a lasting positive impact,” Bohorquez said.

Andrea Briones, 19, is a mass communication/journalism major in The Honors College at North Campus. Briones, who graduated from Youth Co-Op Preparatory High School in 2023, will serve as Social Media Director and a staff writer for The Reporter during the 2023-2024 school year.
