How My Health Has Benefited From The Construction At Kendall Campus
Doctors generally consider walking less than 5,000 steps a day to be sedentary. Based on that information, I have religiously walked 6,000 steps every day.
Taking 6,000 steps a day might not seem difficult but many challenges arise. During one instance, a thunderstorm went on for so long that I couldn’t go outside for fear of being struck by lightning.
Refusing to lose my streak to a silly Florida thunderstorm, I ran in place in my room for an hour to complete my goal.
As different challenges have arisen, running in place has become a common occurrence for me. That has left my mom, on various occasions, irritated by the relentless thumping sounds that come from my pseudo-running sessions.
To remedy the issue, three months ago, my mom and I purchased a treadmill through OfferUp. We installed it in the most accessible place in our house: right next to my bed.
While the treadmill was a game-changer, there were times I was so busy studying and doing work at the college that I didn’t have time to use my treadmill at home without waking up my neighbors.
Fortunately for me, that is when the Kendall Campus decided to make my goal truly accessible by renovating every possible walkway on campus.
Because of the renovations, several walkways have been closed temporarily. That has forced me to search for alternative routes that have often led to more detours and ultimately—more steps.
Most people would be frustrated by the experience but I am thankful for the opportunity to explore the campus that has become a second home.
There is always an element of surprise. You never know which walkway is going to be closed and for how long. A path I took last week is not guaranteed to work the next. This ensures that my mind and legs stay fresh.
The detours throughout the campus have made me walk an extra 2,000 steps per day. That has allowed me to easily reach my 6,000-step goal.
Thank you, Miami Dade College, for providing me a valuable education and a healthier lifestyle.
