Infinity Castle Marks The Beginning Of The End For Demon Slayer
On Sept. 12, Japanese anime director Haruo Sotozaki and Ufotable released Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba — The Movie: Infinity Castle. The film serves as the beginning of a trilogy that will wrap up the Demon Slayer anime.
Since airing in 2019, Demon Slayer has garnered attention as one of the most praised anime in the world. It follows Tanjiro Kamado, a young man living in the Taiso period of Japan, who faces the responsibility of being the caretaker of a widowed family.
After a demon leads to the murders of his family and turns his sister, Nezuko, into a demon, Tanjiro devotes himself to finding a cure. He joins the Demon Slayer Corps, an organization dedicated to hunting the monsters.
He trains to become a Hashira—the highest-ranking swordsmen in the corps—and learns a water-breathing technique and his family’s Hinokami Kagura fire technique.
Infinity Castle starts off where Mugen Train—the previous film—-left off, at a standoff between the Hashira and Muzan Kibutsuji.
Muzan, the strongest demon, seeks immortality. His disciples, known as the twelve Kizuki, are powerful creatures who hunt down the Corps.
The movie opens with Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the Demon Slayer Corps master, explaining his idea to sacrifice himself as bait to secure the plans of cornering Muzan. It there that we realize the situation and the sacrifices required to defeat Muzan.
In Muzan’s Infinity Castle, Corps members are forced to navigate the castle’s never-ending hallways to find and defeat Muzan and his disciples.
Throughout various battles, we are shown themes of loyalty, grief, determination, honor, and resilience.
Shinobu, an insect Hashira, battles with Doma, the strongest of the demon disciples. Shinobu grieves as she avenges her sister, Kanae, vowing to make the demon pay for killing her.
Kanae’s spirit appears and wills her sister to win the battle, serving as a reminder that family walks with you through every step of life.
The fights are also notable for their detailed, colorful animations and intricate, time-period relevant music that make the movie an immersive experience.
In the 4DX screenings of the movies, viewers take note of the intensity of the fights, the scents that make up the scenery and the visual effects of fighting with several elements.
Continuing a previous battle from Mugen Train, Akaza, the third-ranking demon, arrives to finish off Tanjiro and Giyuu. Tanjiro sneaks up on Akaza and slices his head off.
But, Akaza is able to regenerate. As Akaza ponders his morals, he remembers his fiancée, Koyuki, who inspired him to live an honest life, and he killed himself, directing a deadly attack on his own body.
Akaza’s father appears as a ghost and praises him for his decision. Muzan later appears, reminding Akaza of his duties as a demon. A vision of Koyuki holding him and thanking him for his effort is what allows him to accept death.
The detailed design of Akaza is what drew the most attention from viewers. His attacks are snowflakes, serving as a reference to the hairpin Koyuki wore.
His respect for Koyuki is reflected in his morals to never harm women. Additionally, the names of his skills are the same as the fireworks from when he proposed to Koyuki. Even when Akaza has no recollection of life as a human, every one of his details is centered around his passion for Koyuki.
The buzz around Infinity Castle has impressed and inspired new viewers to invest in the series. It’s clear that Demon Slayer is writing its name in history as one of the most influential and notable anime of all time.
