Kendall And Padrón Campus To Launch Sports Management Program This Fall
At Miami Dade College sports are not just extracurricular activities—they’re part of the curriculum.
This August, the School of Global Business, Trade and Transportation is launching a sports management associates of science degree program at Kendall and Eduardo J. Padrón campuses.
The program is a joint-effort between MDC and sports organizations, including FIFA, which is opening offices in Miami in the fall.
“We’ll be spending a lot of time helping our students understand what their opportunities are as professionals in sports management and making [them] feel empowered,” said Pamela Fuertes, dean of the School of Global Business. “They are leaders of sports management and there’s no better community than ours to do that.”
The 60-credit program, which takes approximately two years to complete, will offer three pathways—sports administration, esports management and athletic coaching and leadership operations.
It will offer courses such as Introduction to Sports Management, the Business of Sports, Sports Ethics and Leadership and Strategies of Coaching and Competition.
Students will also have the opportunity to earn college credit certificates in each track. Each certificate will be 18-credits and take about one year to complete.
“I have student athletes in the current courses that I teach and I mentioned [the program] to them and they were so excited,” said Nayrie Smith, an associate professor at Kendall Campus who has led the program’s development and teaches Principles of Business Management, which will be featured in every track. “Why not study something that you love to do?”
According to Fuertes, students will also intern with organizations like the Miami Dolphins or FIFA through the General Business Internship I course.
Students can already register for Intro to Sports Management, the Business of Sports and Sports Event & Facility Management.
“I would be interested in continuing down the path of sports management,” said Garret Rubine, a rising freshman majoring in business administration. “If you tie sports into [business], there’s a higher amount of jobs and I would like to dip my feet into different areas.”
