Kevin Ledoux Resigns As Men’s Basketball Coach At Miami Dade College

For the first time in five years, Miami Dade College is looking for a new men’s basketball coach.

Kevin Ledoux, who served as the Sharks’ head coach since the 2016-2017 season, resigned for personal reasons, according to athletic director Alysia Dyer. He was 57-78 in five full seasons at the school.

The Reporter attempted to reach Ledoux to get a comment concerning his departure, but he did not return several phone calls from the paper.

In a Twitter post published on Ledoux’s page on May 28, he said: “Today is my last official day as HC of the Sharks. Thank you to all of you who supported me and our program.”

Ledoux started his career at MDC as an assistant coach in 2013 under former Sharks’ head basketball coach Stephen Cowherd, a position he held for three years.

He took over as head coach in September of 2016 after Cowherd accepted an assistant coaching position at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

In Ledoux’s head coaching debut, the Sharks broke the National Junior College Athletic Association record for most points scored in a game (189) in a win versus the Red Devils Basketball Academy on Nov. 2, 2016. Ledoux’s first season saw the Sharks break the region VIII record for most three-pointers made (348) but despite their offensive exploits, they amassed a record of 10-19.

The Sharks’ high-octane offense remained in high gear the following season, with the team leading the NJCAA in scoring (108.2 points per game). The offensive firepower helped the team finish with an improved record of 16-14 after the 2017-18 season.

In his third season—despite leading region VIII in scoring for the third straight year—the Sharks regressed, going 10-20. They bounced back the following season, going 18-11 in the 2019-2020. It would be Ledoux’s most successful year. However, the Sharks were unable to sustain that momentum, going 3-14 this year.

This year’s team featured 10 freshmen including wing player Josh Reid from Havelock, North Carolina, who averaged 7.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Reid said Ledoux was a good leader but he struggled to adapt in-game.

He was not surprised that Ledoux left the team.

The losing did not look good,” said Reid, who is undecided on whether he will return to the program next season.

During Ledoux’s five-year tenure as head coach at MDC, the Sharks never qualified for the State Tournament.

Dyer said MDC hopes to hire a new head basketball coach by July or August. The team typically starts playing scrimmages in October and tips-off the regular season in November.

It is never easy losing a head coach who has been a member of the athletics department for the last eight years and who had such a strong passion for the game of basketball,” Dyer said.
