Maryam Laguna Borrego Selected As MDC President’s Chief Of Staff

Maryam Laguna Borrego has been selected as Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega’s Chief of Staff.

Laguna Borrego—whose first day was March 15—serves as a facilitator between Pumariega and key stakeholders in subjects like government and cultural affairs. She will also be the liaison to the Board of Trustees.

“This position provides me the opportunity to reunite with President Pumariega to make the most positive impact on the most lives,” Laguna Borrego said. “Higher education has always been my passion, especially when providing opportunities to underserved student populations.”

For a year and a half, she served as the executive assistant to the Wolfson Campus President when Pumariega held that position between 2012-14. Borrego served as a facilitator for the office and ensured the functions of the office ran smoothly.

She then worked at Take Stock in Children—an organization that provides mentors and scholarships to low-income kids—as director of partnerships and communications until 2017. Pumariega served as president and CEO of the organization until 2015.

Most recently, since August of 2017, Laguna Borrego served as assistant to the vice president of public affairs at the University of Miami.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology in 2009 and a master’s degree in public policy/public affairs administration in 2011 from the University of Florida. She is expected to complete a doctorate of education degree in higher education leadership from the University of Miami this May.

“My college experience was transformational and I am committed to providing the same opportunities [I had] to others and to let them know anything and everything is possible,” Laguna Borrego said.
