MDC-TV Nominated For Three Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards

MDC-TV, Miami Dade College’s award-winning television station, has been nominated for three Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards.

The awards are presented by the Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.  MDC-TV has won nine regional Emmys since 2011.

This year’s winners will be announced on Dec. 2 at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida.

“[Although] our small College TV station contends with big companies, our unique strength lies in the collaborative synergy between our dedicated team of students, professors and allied professionals, who collectively contribute their expertise to our projects,” said  Ariel Rubalcava, MDC-TV’s executive director and senior producer.

The station was nominated in the following categories; Special Event Coverage for Video Game Concert 2023, Arts and Entertainment for Echoes of Inspiration and Interview/Discussion for the Nicolas Cage: Actor’s Spotlight @ MDC segment.

Video Game Concert 2023 was led by Rubalcava and Alberto Bade, an adjunct professor at North Campus who also serves as director of the MDC Symphony Orchestra.

The project, which has happened six times since 2015 when it earned the station its first regional Emmy, featured variations of popular video game soundtracks like Super Mario, Final Fantasy and Skyrim.

They were performed by Bade’s students and external musicians the conductor wanted to work with.

“I do these projects to unite people,” Bade said. “I’ve always [liked] combining because everybody has a special talent. And when you combine all those special talents and you bring them into one concentrated program, it leads to really special things.”

Echoes of Inspiration was led by Bade. He was assisted by Leonardo Colloca, Humberto Casanova and Rubalcava.

Inspired by Bade’s students’ compositions, the nominated project included him conducting their work.

“I have so many students in the orchestra that want to be composers and they each compose their own styles in their own ways, but all very good,” Bade said. “Now they’re composing [that] to me in a style like Brahms or like Beethoven. So, I made this whole program about that.”

Nicolas Cage: Actor’s Spotlight @ MDC was the final nomination. It was led by Rubalcava and Adrian Garcia, an assistant professor in the film and digital production program at North Campus.

It consisted of an interview with award-winning actor Nicolas Cage discussing his acting career and the legacy he hopes to leave.

“The Nicolas Cage show holds a special place in my heart, given my upbringing closely intertwined with watching his illustrious journey as a Hollywood actor,” said Rubalcava, who  served as the director and post-production supervisor for the project.

MDC-TV airs on Comcast channel 78, Atlantic Broadband channel 78, AT & T U-Verse channel 99 and on Youtube.
