MultiVersus Is Revolutionizing Online Fighting Games
MultiVersus is Warner Bros.’ newest hot take on free-to-play online fighting games since the release of its early access open beta on July 19.
The game’s main objective is to knock out your opponent using various attacks and items unique to each playable character. So far, the 17-character roster features pop-culture icons such as Batman, Shaggy from Scooby-Doo and Tom and Jerry.
As of Aug. 4, three new characters have been announced: LeBron James and Rick and Morty from the popular adult animated cartoon. Warner Bros. aims to release more characters as time goes on.
Seeing the beloved icons of our childhood collide with one another is one of MultiVersus’ biggest attractions.
To keep variety and promote balanced gameplay, characters are split into five categories—bruiser, tank, support, assassin and mage/range.
MultiVersus has already attracted millions of competitive players. With the game being pushed to its limits, there were bound to be some issues at launch. Some servers have lagged due to high traffic volume, frustrating players who might lose a well-deserved win.
An unbalanced aspect of the game is the pre-fight perks you can choose for a character. That offers players the ability to make certain aspects of their characters better at the cost of unnecessary gameplay complications.
The developers already had to release the game’s first patch after some players found certain combos with specific players to be too powerful.
Another limitation of the open beta is the lack of multiple modes to play besides one-on-one and two-on-two fights. This, coupled with a limited map roster, can cause the game to feel boring and repetitive unless it is updated frequently.
Frequent updates and new game modes, maps and characters will keep the game fresh and allow MultiVersus to become a fan favorite. Despite minor hiccups, the game is on the right track to achieving this.
One positive feature of the game is its emphasis on the free-to-play format. MultiVersus lives by this format by ensuring progression of the game as organic and independent of pesky microtransactions.
The cross-platform nature of the game will also allow gamers to clash with one another despite owning different gaming consoles. Currently, the game is available on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S and Microsoft Windows.
MultiVersus is a breath of fresh air for online fighting games. Despite the issues of its early release, the game offers a free and exciting alternative to popular online fighting games.
