Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia Explores Mother-Daughter Relationships

Ginny & Georgia hit our Netflix screens for the first time on Feb. 24 and it’s officially the hottest show on the platform.

It involves everything one tends to love: drama, humor and living room dance parties.

Ginny & Georgia tells the story of a young mom, Georgia (Brianne Howey), and her teenage daughter, Ginny (Antonia Gentry). They, along with Ginny’s younger brother Austin (Diesel La Torraca), have just moved to a new town in Massachusetts.

For some of them, the move was a way to escape their past, but for others, the move was a start to new beginnings.

The series follows their journey of new beginnings, hardships, heartbreak and happiness.

Ginny is trying to figure herself out as she navigates high school, which is made difficult by her mother who can’t seem to get her life together.

There are 10 episodes in Season 1 of Ginny & Georgia. Each episode is approximately one hour long. The series was created by Sarah Lampert, who based Season 1 on her high school experience.

The female-centric show focuses on women who are funny, yet intense and smart, yet complicated. All while dealing with real life issues and struggles.

Ginny & Georgia is slightly reminiscent of Gilmore Girls—which follows a mother and daughter living in a Connecticut town—but its essence is its own.

Although some viewers may compare the two shows and underplay its plot, they each have their own dynamics that make it interesting and different.

Unlike Gilmore Girls, Ginny & Georgia deals with serious topics in a much less censored way, such as Ginny’s sex life, her biracial identity and her friendship problems.

The show wrestles with complex topics that are often tough to talk about, let alone figure out, as a teenager navigates through high school.

Rory and Lorelai from Gilmore Girls were mature and grounded characters who were concerned with real-life predicaments, like where to go to college or how to mend existing relationships between family members.

Meanwhile, the plot of Ginny & Georgia incorporates sex, murder, drugs, racism, credit card fraud, body image issues and identity concerns. It’s clearly not as carefree and light as Gilmore Girls.

Many people have been hooked on Season 1 of Ginny & Georgia, leaving reviews saying that the episodes are addictive.

However, there is currently no word on whether or not it will be renewed for Season 2.

An announcement should be made soon, but taking pre-production into consideration, a second season should not be expected earlier than February 2022 if the show is given the thumbs up to return.
