Classes Canceled at North Campus After Bomb Threat Reported
North Campus was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon after campus administrators received a bomb threat via email, according to Miami-Dade Police Department Public Information Officer Daniel Ferrin.
Evening classes were canceled. The campus is expected to reopen in the morning.
College officials received the threat at 2:33 p.m. and immediately evacuated buildings 1, 2, 4 and the Preschool Lab.
At 3:28 p.m. the College sent an email to students and staff: “This is an emergency alert from Miami Dade College. Please evacuate ALL BUILDINGS at MDC North Campus immediately. If heading to the Campus, stay away until the all-clear has been given. Additional instructions will be provided as needed. Thank you”
“Unfortunately we live in a new world and these situations have to be taken seriously,” said Juan Mendieta, the director of communications at the College.
The Miami-Dade Police Department was sweeping the campus with K-9 dogs. Roads leading into the campus were blocked and heavy police activity was present.
Students calmly evacuated the buildings as public safety officials ushered them away from the campus and into the parking lot area.
“I don’t know how to feel because like there was one [bomb threat] at Kendall Campus and it was a false alarm and then here I don’t know,” said Martha De La Fuente, a physical therapy assistant major, who works at the Social Sciences Department on campus.
This is the second such incident at an MDC campus in the past four months.
On Sept. 27, the Kendall Campus was evacuated after an anonymous caller made a bomb threat to the College’s library. Classes were canceled but resumed the following day after no evidence of a bomb was found.
