Reporter Alumni Selected For Internships
Three members of The Reporter’s inaugural staff have been selected for paid internships at daily print publications.
Gregory Castillo, a photographer on this year’s staff, has been selected to intern at The Miami Herald during the spring semester. He will work in the photography department and on the continuous news desk.
Castillo, 21, has previously served as the Kendall Campus Bureau Chief, and photo editor for The Reporter. He won four first-place awards from the Florida College System Activities Association in 2011: News Photo, Feature Photo, Sports Photo, and Picture Story.
Lazaro Gamio, currently an Electronic Media Major at New World School of the Arts, will intern this summer in the graphics department at the Seattle Times.
Gamio, 22, was an information graphics intern last summer at National Geographic. During his tenure at The Reporter, Gamio won seven design awards from the Florida College System Activities Association while serving as the paper’s Art Director. In 2012, he won third place from the Associated Collegiate Press Awards in the Newspaper Page One category. Last January, Gamio participated in the New York Times Student Journalism Institute in Arizona after being selected during a national search. He is currently a freelance designer and a part-time online producer for The Miami Herald.
Monique Madan, who is currently studying journalism at Emerson College in Boston, will intern at the Dallas Morning News this summer in the criminal justice cluster.
Madan, 20, served as the editor-in-chief of The Reporter during the 2010-2011 and the 2011-12 school year. She won six FCSAA awards including first-place honors in: News Story, Feature Story and the Editorial writing category.
Madan also participated in the New York Times Student Journalism Institute this past January. While in Miami, she worked as a part-time staff writer for The Miami Herald. Many of her stories appeared on the cover of the A section and Metro. This past April, she was awarded the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.
