Revisiting the Biggest Hits of the Summer

Whether you backpacked across Europe, or stayed at home accompanied by your Netflix account, your summer was eventful. As the fall semester creeps in, it is time to say goodbye to the laid back summer vibes and welcome the drop in humidity.

One thing you might not be quite as ready to let go of are some of the biggest hits this season had to offer. These are some of  the songs that dominated the charts this summer. They made you dance, then made you hate them for being so overplayed. What better way to wrap things up than by revisiting these pop gems.

Lean On – Major Lazer & DJ Snake (feat. MØ) – (Peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100)

Popular EDM group Major Lazer collaborated with DJ Snake, and together they created a ridiculously infectious electronic song for the masses. Danish singer MØ’s peculiar vocals alongside the stellar production gave “Lean On” a sure spot on the charts, and on the stereos of many.

Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) – Silentó (Peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100)

Remember during the 00’s those genius hip-hop songs that also featured signature dances? Well they came back, even if for a brief moment, with Silentó’s debut single “Watch Me”. The straightforward song even alludes to the famous “Stanky Legg,” as well as Soulja Boy’s “Crank That” from a few years back.

Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix)OMI (Peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100)

Jamaican singer OMI had his first hit with a remix of his song “Cheerleader.” This sunny reggae and deep house fusion number is an obvious summer hit. Just watch its music video, set at a beach party with the singer surrounded by attractive women. With this hit,OMI captured the ideal summer spirit.

Bad Blood – Taylor Swift feat. Kendrick Lamar (Peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100)

Fan of Swift or not, “Bad Blood” was a huge success for the singer. The single, from mega hit record 1989, featured guest vocals by Kendrick Lamar, which was a huge change for Swift, who was formerly known for her pop-country crossover style. The song was also a huge success due to its star-studded spy-themed music video.

Can’t Feel My Face – The Weeknd (Peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100)

Critics love this Canadian R&B innovator, and it appears he is finally getting the same reaction commercially. All it took was this bouncy and slick 80’s inspired track. The single stems from the artist’s sophomore album, entitled Beauty Behind the Madness.

Drag Me Down – One Direction (Debuted at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100)

British-Irish boyband One Direction pulled a Beyoncé with their latest single “Drag Me Down,” releasing it by surprise. This catchy pop rock number is the lead single to their upcoming fifth record, which will be their first without former member Zayn Malik. The band is set to take a break in 2016.

Trap Queen – Fetty Wap (Peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100)

Fetty Wap’s debut single “Trap Queen” was a massive hit. It took some time for the song to gain attention, but once it did, it was inescapable. Initially released in April of 2014, a re-release of

this single gave it the boost it needed to put this rapper in the limelight.

While these songs may still be blasting out your speakers, it is time to turn the page and let the summer go. Let’s now welcome the fall, along with the newer catchy songs it will bombard us with. There is always a song for every occasion.
