Seven MDC Basketball Players Receive All-Southern Conference Honors
The Miami Dade College men’s and women’s basketball teams struggled this season.
They combined for an 11-23 overall record—a big drop from last year’s 38-23 mark—and failed to qualify for the State Tournament.
Despite the poor season, seven MDC players were awarded All-Southern Conference honors for their performances.
Women’s Basketball
Sophomore forwards Nazlah Morrow and Alise Markova were named to the All-Southern Conference First Team, and freshman guard Jamaica Williams was named to the Second Team.
Morrow, who committed to DePaul University last November, was the team’s top performer this season. She averaged a double-double with 15.2 points and 13.2 rebounds per contest.
Markova, who committed to Liberty University in November, averaged 10.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and a team-best 3.6 blocks per game.
Williams averaged 3.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game in 16 games.
Despite those solid individual performances, the Lady Sharks concluded the season with an 8-9 record and finished third in the Southern Conference with a 3-6 mark. The team won its last two conference games but it was not enough to clinch a spot in the postseason.
“We were underachievers given the talent we had on the roster and the endurance of dealing with this pandemic and its impact,” said Lady Sharks’ Head Coach Susan Summons.
Men’s Basketball
Despite posting a paltry 3-14 mark this season, four Sharks were recognized with Southern Conference honors.
Sophomore forward Victor Hart, who committed to Florida International University last month, was named to the All-Southern Conference First Team for the second year in a row. He averaged 12.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this season.
Sophomore wing players Denari Garrett and Ciaran Sandy and freshman guard Kemari Brown received Second Team honors.
In 16 games, Garrett averaged 11.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while Sandy averaged 11.9 points and 5.8 rebounds in 17 games. Brown also contributed with 10.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.
“[They] deserved the honor of the All-Conference awards,” said Sharks’ Head Coach Kevin Ledoux.”
However, Ledoux said the squad fell short of their goal—winning a State Championship.
“I am very disappointed in the team’s performance this year,” Ledoux said. “We have high expectations for our basketball program.”
