Baseball Team Recovering After Five Game Losing Streak In Early March

The Miami Dade College baseball team (15-12) is recovering from a five game losing streak in early March after winning their past three games.  

Offensively, the Sharks have a .370 team batting average and a .510 slugging percentage. They’ve scored 215 runs in 27 games.

“Our bats are hot right now,” said catcher Nelson Mompierre, who has three home runs, 28 RBI and is batting .416 this year. “We’re hitting from top to bottom. We all have a good approach and it’s working out for us.”

Several freshman have been producing at the plate. Shortstop Kevin Santiago has 26 RBI and a .526 slugging percentage. Infielder’s Santiago Espinal ( a .447 batting average and a .638 slugging percentage)  and Raul Cabrera, who has a .500 batting average, have also contributed.

Despite the impressive offensive statistics, Head Coach Danny Price believes the team has room for improvement.

“There’s talent here…we can improve a lot,” Price said. “I expect we’re going to improve, but we haven’t played up to what I thought we’re capable of playing to yet. I think our best baseball is in front of us.”

One weakness in particular, Price said, is pitching. In the Sharks’ 27 games this season, they have allowed 141 runs, averaging 4.10 runs allowed per game.

“A lot of jobs in the bullpen are up for grabs, and it’s just a matter of if someone really wants those jobs, and steps up to get them,” Price said.

Sophomore first baseman, Christopher Medina, believes that the team has the ability to go far this season.

“Everyone here is like a brother,” said Medina, who has 15 RBI and a .403 batting average for the Sharks this season. “We all play together and have one goal in mind – to go to States.”

The Sharks next game is at the baseball field at Kendall Campus, 11011 S.W. 104 st., at 3 p.m. versus Broward College on March 22.
