The Reporter Renames Its Bi-Weekly Newsletter To The Hammerhead
The Reporter’s newsletter is changing its name.
A Closer Look At The Reporter was created on April 14, 2020 by then editor-in-chief Heidi Perez-Moreno as a way to continue informing the Miami Dade College community after the paper stopped publishing during the pandemic.
The bi-weekly newsletter has published 31 issues during its run.
It’s currently on a one-week summer hiatus but when it returns on Aug. 20, it will do so with a new name: The Hammerhead.
The name is in homage to The Reporter’s inaugural art director Lazaro Gamio—now a graphics editor at The New York Times—who proposed the paper be called The Hammerhead when the student publication started in October of 2010.
But it wasn’t meant to be. The Hammerhead, one of three names considered—The Deadline was the runner up—finished last in the staff’s voting.
Nearly eleven years later, The Hammerhead final had its day.
“At the end of the day, we are the MDC Sharks and what better way to represent our community than by naming our newsletter after a shark,” said Ammy Sanchez, who serves as the paper’s editor-in-chief. “It’s also a cooler name.”
The newsletter is emailed to subscribers every other Friday by 10 a.m. It contains the latest updates from the news, briefing, sports, arts and entertainment, and forum sections of the paper.
Readers are greeted by a short blurb from the paper’s editor-in-chief. The note typically engages readers with a short synopsis of each issue or a personal look at the EIC’s week.
Although the paper is scheduled to resume printing in the fall semester, the newsletter will continue as a way to augment the publication.
“Sometimes people don’t have time to check our website, but they’re able to read a short email,” Sanchez said. “It’s really just a fun and quick way to inform others.”
